Are you wondering about travelling these days? However, it was such a long time since we did not dream about travelling. We do not have the option to remain underground. Being a traveller, we need to stay inspired about travelling. The best way I know how to stay stimulated for wanderlust is to read various travel books. There is no option but to wait for the world to reopen. Therefore, I want to bestow some of the best travel books to read that have my emotions attached to them. These travel books are not just to read but they made me laugh, made me cry, and encouraged me to get out and travel around the world.

MASKED RIDER BY NEIL PEART
It is one of my favourite adventure travel books that you may not have heard of before. A talented drummer from Rush, The Rock Band, most people know him by this talent. Neil Peart was not only the greatest drummer in the history of music but also an avaricious cyclist. Unfortunately, Peart died of cancer, but he always remains alive through his music and travelogue books. Masked Rider is an honest and undisguised tale of his time cycling in West Africa. The one who is excited to go on an inspiring adventure must read this travel book. Neil Peart is the man behind the rock star who makes us realize superstars are also living the same way as we are living. That’s why this travel book is one of the best travel books to read in the world.
FINDING GOBI BY DION’S LEONARD
This travel book is especially for animal lovers who have a melting heart for dogs. It is a kind of travel book to read that brings a smile to your face and is one of the best adventure travel books. Dion Leonard was one of the ultramarathon runners who had travelled to China. He had a goal on his mind to finish on the podium of a 155-mile race through the Gobi desert. The inspiring story of Leonard, who has a heart-winning stray dog, kept pace through heat and exhaustion for 70 miles. This travel book shows how Leonard is transformed from a focused veteran to a man. He always shares a little food with a stray dog, Gobi and the food which he has in his packet.
AMERICAN SHAOLIN BY MATTHEW POLLY
Matthew Polly is a regular American who expresses his time living, studying and performing with the Shaolin monks in China. This travel book is one of the exotic and hilarious travel memoirs about fulfilling your dreams. This is the best travel book to read and follow along as Matthew drops out of Princeton to pursue his ambition of transforming his skinny physique into a KUNG FU master. He tells his story of breaking into the secret Shaolin Kung Fu that has strange disciplines such as THE IRON CROTCH and also for the other various indestructible body parts.
CRAZY RICH ASIANS BY KEVIN KAWN
You must have watched this movie as it took the world by storm. It is one of the rare travel books that translates beautifully to the screen. This book shows you peek behind the looking glass of the secretive billionaire families who have more money than Vladimir Putin. This travel book to read and follow along as Rachel joins her boyfriend in Singapore on a summer holiday only to find out that her gentle boyfriend is the most eligible bachelor of Aisa. However, his family, even including his mother, is out to tear them apart. It is one of the most crazy travel books or movies that I have ever seen in my life.
WHITE TIGER BY ARAVIND ADIGA
White Tiger is the travel book to read that tells you a tale of a dirty and unforgiving India where it does not allow people to claw their way out of their casteism. Now it is transformed into a movie, and one can watch it on Netflix. If you are looking to travel to India, it is a must-read book for all foreign travellers. It is the kind of travel book that neither of us could put down. Although most people spend their time in an Ashram or driving around the country on an organized tour isolated from the truth, they will not like it. But, as one review said, “It is the travel book that Incredible India Tourism does not want you to read.”
THE BEACH BY ALEX GARLAND
The book is far away better than the movie with Leonardo DiCaprio. I have watched one of the worst movies and hated it. But one thing I loved was the book by Alex Garland. The story of The Beach tells you what travel was like in Thailand way back in the 1990s. The guesthouses in Thailand and their rooms were disgusting, but when we looked at the streets. Backpackers were roaming around seeking adventure while escaping the world and drinking cheap beer. Most people don’t know about it, but there were still undiscovered coves and beaches. It would be a great adventure even if travelling to Thailand for the first time. Everyone is going to the land of Smiles for the very first time.
BILL BRYSON’S IN A SUNBURNED COUNTRY
Bill Bryson is one of the heart-winning authors, but my favourite travel memoir is In A Sunburned Country. I had not read anything written by Bryson before, but when I read it. This travel book inspired me to read more travel books by him. It turned my sad mood into happiness, and I laughed out loud. There was a time when the world was curious to know Australia. You can not resist booking a ticket to see it yourself there that shows the quirkiness of the island country. It is one of the best travel books to read, but you can go around the world with Bill Bryson through his other readings. Kindly find out the below-mentioned travel books by Bill Bryson:
- A Walk in the Woods
- A Stranger to Myself
- The Best American Travel Writing
- The Road to Little Dribbling – An American in Britain
DAVE BARRY DOES JAPAN
Most people are aware of old school or new school. Dave Barry may be old school, but he is hilarious. He is the only one who sparked my love for travel blogging and how powerful, funny and inspiring it could be. I never had even dreamed that I would become a travel blogger, but the inspiring part of reading about his escapades around the world. He writes about Japanese traditions through humour and experiences at karaoke bars, geisha encounters, kabuki theatre, and confusing comedy clubs. For a few people who know about Japan, it is still very confusing even today, so it is worth a read.
LOVE AFRICA BY JEFFREY GETTLEMAN
This travel book tells the saga of Jeffry Gettleman, the East Africa bureau chief for the New York Times. It all begins with his first trip to Africa when he volunteered and fell in love with the continent. However, his girlfriend Courtenay is a criminal defence lawyer who kept calling him back to the USA. This travel book to read and follow along as he navigates his career as a journalist to his love for Africa and his perfect love relationship with Courtenay. We know how Africa can tug deep inside your heart. Can you have it all? Just go for reading and follow along on this travel book through Africa because we are not giving it away.
THE ALCHEMIST BY PAULO COELHO
A Shepherd Boy’s story inspired millions, and it is an oldie but a goodie. This travel book tells you the story of a shepherd boy named Santiago who sells his flock and purchases a ticket to Tangier, where he is robbed and must work at a shop to find his way home. He ends up taking an epic adventure across the Sahara. After all his adventure journeys, he discovers his fortune right back where he started. I will read this book before I start travelling full-time, and it will put me in the mood to wander and appreciate my life. I think The Alchemist will be the catalyst for my dreaming of becoming a travel blogger and taking the leap to explore the world.
A LONG WAY GONE BY ISHMAEL BEAH
This travel book is a no-holds-barred autobiography of a child soldier, Ishmael Beah, who is gripping. A Long Way Gone tells how an innocent child can be forced into fierce warfare in Sierra Leone, where he has lost everything, whether it was his family or his home and his soul. Ishmael tells you of his journey to evade the military. He had to hide in the jungle and was half-starved to death for three years. It recounts the fear and despair he felt each day until the government army captured him. He was forced to commit unthinkable acts and hopped up on drugs. It is a story of going to hell and returning, living a life of revenge and violence. UNICEF rescued him, but it was a long and painful rehabilitation.
THE BANG BANG CLUB BY GREG MAINOVICH & JAOA SILVA
This travel book set in Apartheid-Era South Africa, the Bang Bang Club, is a chronicle telling the tale of the four photojournalists that dared to access the townships and document history as it was happening. Both the journalists Greg Marinovich & Jaoa Silva wrote a Heartbreaking and shocking book. The Bang Bang Club does not hold back when describing the brutality of that time. The photographers had to attain terms with their demons and what they witnessed day in and day out as war correspondent journalists. Their captured photos made history and set new standards, earning a Pulitzer Prize for both photographers. It is a must-read travel book that shows you a life full of threats and fear.
