Driving down NH 8, you can observe two separated faces of Gurugram, the old and the new. Old Gurgaon, a mini-Gurgaon in its own right, or, to put it another way, has retained its original identity. The people living here have varied personalities, habits and qualities and have their own culture. You residents of Gurgaon’s Millennium City boast about your terrace gardening. Have you ever heard of sleeping on a terrace?! Aha! Welcome to the life of a Gurgaonwala from the past! Let’s have a look from the eye of Travliv360 at the rest of the peculiarities. Everything you should know about Gurugram, the kingdom of dreams.
GURUGRAM IN A NUTSHELL
Sectors 14, 15, and 17 are the most developed and sought-after residential areas on this side of the highway. Many business families, administrative office residences & wealthy residents of Old Gurgaon have relocated to this area. They shifted here for the convenience of the old town & easy access to Delhi via highway. You might have to wrack your brains to recall the name of your next-door neighbour in the new Gurgaon. However, the scenario is upside down in Oldtown due to the deep camaraderie and brotherhood. While you are trying to locate a house number, then come to a halt to seek assistance from another Colonywala. They may ask for the name of the person who will be guiding you.
THE DESI OLD GURUGRAM YOU NEED TO KNOW
While women in condominiums or Nouveau Gurgaon, which is literally on the other side of the fence or highway, take their entire household, from the driver to the maid to the cook, to hypermarkets for bargains, damsels in good old Gurgaon stick to wholesale markets and ordinary stores in Sadar. Another reason is that they reside pretty close to Sadar, but this is not the only one. Don’t you know that Pammi Ji can make almost anything in her kitchen (with Sadar ingredients, of course!).
Call it a traditional mindset or blame it on the joint family arrangement, where papaji only eats Ghar ka Khana where people order less food from restaurants instead of cooking at home. Compared to New Gurgaon, the allocation of food home delivery orders is lower, which may explain why most fast food outlets are on this side of the LoC! Punjabis are everywhere! Old Gurgaon might be considered a mini-Punjab and of itself. It appears that Punjabis have rained here. It rained, and now they are in charge. The ultimate things you should know about Gurugram.
OLD GURUGRAM, STILL STEALING MANY HEARTS
Despite having four-wheelers, many households would still own a two-wheeler, such as an Activa or a Motorcycle. Everyone from papaji to the smallest member of the clan Bittu can get caught speeding through the tiny lanes on the family’s two-wheeler for errands or calling on someone given the traffic jams and lack of parking spaces, which is a sensible approach. You migrant residents residing in a beautiful New Gurgaon home may be talking about terrace gardening. Have you ever slept on a terrace?! Despite air conditioners and coolers, this is one of the few places in Delhi NCR where SOME people still sleep at their terrace throughout the heat. And no, it has nothing to do with electricity conservation!
They’re just used to it and are a more daring bunch (both in terms of insects and robbers!). You can’t get a finer or more rejuvenating night’s sleep than one in the woods. Remember that Anushka Sharma-Ranveer Singh movie where the wedding took place under a tent, either on the side of the road or completely blocking it, with Shakar paras and shahi paneer served by the local halwai? Yes, Old Gurgaon still has that feature, with the halwai providing supplies for most weddings and festivities. This is all you should know about Gurugram in deep.
NEW GURUGRAM OVER THE OLD ONE
While agencies and well-to-do English-speaking maids have been established in New Gurgaon’s homes and apartments, Old Gurgaon continues to rely on part-time-based or domestic help. The culture, as well as the salaries, are drastically different in relative terms. According to a recent analysis by Square Yards, Gurugram is the best city to live in during COVID-19. Our millennium city, a rapidly rising social, economic, and residential hub, is already a LIT AF city to live in it is also littered with various posh and expensive locales of all, this haven of tranquillity, awash in greenery, birds, this city stays at the pinnacle of luxury locales! The soothing green panorama of the golf course reaches as far as the eyes can see above that, the Aravalli Ranges offer an epic backdrop, so you’d barely believe you’re living in the craziness of a bustling metropolis.
WRAPPING UP THE THING
Last but not least, Old Gurgaon natives have a stronger sense of connection to their community and a mindset for safety. While most of us on this side of the expressway complain about issues like safety and infrastructure, Old Gurgaon residents feel happy and secure in their surroundings. You’d never hear them complain or feel insecure about anything. That’s all you should know about Gurugram, the Kingdom of Dreams.
